How to Use a French Press: Ratio, Grind and Time for a Perfect Cup

Guides3 min read

The French press is the easiest way to a full-bodied cup with a silky texture. With these measurements, you’ll never pour a watery or gritty cup again.

The French press has a reputation for simplicity, and it has earned it: water, coffee, time and a plunger. But that simplicity is exactly why every detail shows. Here are the measurements we use at home, and why they work.

The French Press Coffee Ratio: 1 to 15

Use 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams (or milliliters) of water. If you like it softer, move to 1:16 or 1:17. Get this coffee to water ratio right and everything else falls into place.

Water Coffee Approx. cups
350 ml (about 12 fl oz) 23 g (about 4 tablespoons) 2 small cups
500 ml (about 17 fl oz) 33 g (about 6 tablespoons) 2 large mugs
1 liter (about 34 fl oz) 66 g (about 12 tablespoons) 4 to 5 cups

The Grind: Coarse, Like Sea Salt

A French press needs a coarse grind. Too fine, and the coffee turns bitter while sediment slips through the filter. If you have a grinder, grind right before brewing: our whole bean coffee is made for exactly that.

How to Use a French Press, Step by Step

  1. Heat the water to a boil and wait 30 seconds. You’re aiming for 92 to 96 °C (about 198 to 205 °F).
  2. Preheat the press with a little hot water, then pour it out.
  3. Add the coffee and pour in half the water. Wait 30 seconds: the coffee “blooms” and releases gas.
  4. Add the rest of the water, stir gently and set the lid on without pressing the plunger.
  5. Wait 4 minutes in total.
  6. Press the plunger slowly, without forcing it, and serve right away.
The detail that changes everythingDon’t leave the coffee sitting in the press after you pour: it keeps extracting and turns bitter. If there’s some left, transfer it to a thermos or a carafe.

If Something Isn’t Right

  • Tastes bitter: grind coarser, or shorten the time to 3½ minutes.
  • Tastes watery: use more coffee (1:14) or grind a little finer.
  • Too much sediment: the grind is too fine; let the press settle for a minute before pouring.

The Best Coffee for French Press

A French press brings out a coffee’s sweetness and texture. That’s why we recommend our Medium Roast whole bean (or ground if you don’t have a grinder): caramel, nuts and a silky body. If you like a bolder cup, try Carnival Roast whole bean.
